Hoisin sauce is nutritionally comparable to black bean sauce. A tablespoon of hoisin sauce has about 35 calories and .5 grams of fat.

It has about half the sodium of black bean sauce with just 238 mg. Can I substitute black bean sauce for hoisin? Yes, you can!

2)Miso Paste

Vietnamese soybean paste is also called Tuong. It is made from soybeans fermented with a specific kind of mold. It is very similar to miso paste but not quite as thick or dry. 

Soybean paste can replace black bean sauce in any recipe, using the same quantity. It has a salty, sweet flavor that is great on fish or vegetables.

Oyster sauce has a salty and sweet flavor along with a little umami taste thanks to the seafood.

While oyster sauce may not be fermented, it is a fantastic substitute for black bean sauce. Use the oyster sauce in any stir-fry or noodle recipe.

Kecap Manis often has cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper which makes it a spicy substitute for black bean paste.

Homemade black bean sauce is not hard to make at all. You will need to find some cans of fermented black beans but that is the hardest part of the whole recipe! Substitute black bean sauce for fermented black beans mixed with a few other tasty ingredients. This recipe is even better than the best black bean sauce brand! 


  • ⅓ cup fermented black beans
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup minced garlic
  • ¼ cup minced ginger
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • ¼ cup chinese rice wine
  • 2 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp hot pepper sauce (optional)
  • 3 tsp cornstarch


  1. Drain, rinse and dry the fermented black beans. 
  2. Mash the black beans with a fork until they are a thick paste. 
  3. Add the olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium high heat.
  4. Add the garlic and ginger to the oil and sauce for one minute. Add the mashed black beans and stir. 
  5. Add all of the other ingredients except the cornstarch. Stir and cook for about 3-5 minutes to reduce the liquid in the pan. Stir occasionally. 
  6. Stir the cornstarch with 2 Tbsp of water in a small bowl.
  7. Whisk the cornstarch mix into the sauce pan and stir until the liquid in the pan is nice and thick. 
  8. The black bean sauce is ready to use!
