Is Raisin Bread Healthy? [Find Out Now]

Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread is the healthiest raisin bread, better than Dave’s Raisin Bread, Sun-Maid Raisin Bread, Thomas’ Cinnamon Swirl Raisin Bread, and Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread.

With 18 grams carbohydrates, 0 grams fat, 4 grams protein, and 80 calories, you get exactly what you need in a slice of bread for a healthy contribution of nutrients for the day.

Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread is higher in protein than most other raisin breads, and it has more fiber, fewer carbs, and less sugar than other brands. With no cholesterol and minimal amounts of sodium, Ezekiel raisin bread is safe for low fat diets, diabetics, those with high blood pressure, and better than raisin breads from Sun-Made, Thomas’, Dave’s and Pepperidge Farm.

Choosing a healthy raisin bread is like choosing a shoe: you have to get it right; otherwise, you’ll end up with side effects.

If the carbs aren’t right, you’ll gain weight. If the fat grams aren’t right, you’ll gain weight. If the fiber isn’t high enough, you could end up constipated.

If the sodium is too high, you’ll have swelling and look puffy in the face. There are lots of things to consider.

But here I made it easy for you to be the best judge of not only raisin breads on the market, but also other breads.

Plus you get three recipes for making your own healthier raisin bread as well.

What is the Healthiest Raisin Bread?

When you want the healthiest raisin bread, choose Ezekiel Raisin Bread. The protein, carbs and fat are right, and the ingredients and taste are awesome. That’s what matters.

Fresh Raisin Bread

Whatever goes into your mouth has to be healthy if you want to be healthy.

After working with hundreds of diabetics and people that weren’t healthy over the years, I found that many of them were eating far too much bread, and the breads weren’t healthy.

I started doing my own comparisons of bread and was shocked to find that the healthier choices weren’t often sitting on the shelves of many grocery stores.

That’s when I began creating my own criteria for analyzing breads, including raisin bread.

In this article, we will compare five different popular types of raisin breads on the market right now:

Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Bread, Dave’s Raisin Bread, Sun-Made Raisin Bread, Thomas’ Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bread, and Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread. You’ll learn how to analyze them yourself as well.

Is Cinnamon Raisin Bread Healthy to Eat?

The answer is yes if you look at the protein, carbs, fat, calories, sodium and cholesterol.

ProductProteinCarbsFatCaloriesSodiumCholesterol
Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread (1 slice)4 gm18 gm0 gm8065 mg0 mg
Dave’s Raisin Bread (1 slice)4 gm17 gm1.5 gm9095 mg0 mg

Thomas’ Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bread (1 slice)2 gm18 gm1.5 gm90140 mg0 mg
Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread (1 slice)2 gm20 gm1.5 gm100105 mg0 mg

All the different types of raisin breads that were evaluated fall exactly in the realm of what you want for protein, fat, carbs, calories, sodium, and cholesterol.

If you are asking this question from the standpoint of if you should be eating regular bread or can you eat bread that is almost like a dessert – like cinnamon raisin bread, the answer is still yes.

There’s not much difference between regular breads and raisin breads based on the protein, fat, carbs, calories, sodium and cholesterol.

You might be on a diet and see that what you are eating is so restrictive that it makes you want to cheat a little bit but not go overboard.

Is cinnamon raisin bread healthy to eat on my diet might be your question. And the answer is yes.

Or perhaps you are having some issues with food sensitivities and some foods upset you.

In this case you may want to know whether there are ingredients in cinnamon raisin bread that are red flags. The answer is yes, there are.

Or maybe you are a healthy eater and want to know if cinnamon raisin bread is healthy, and if so, which one?

Or is it a total wash and similar to potato chips?  The answer is to get Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread if you want the best.

Whatever your goal is, the answers will be here for you.

What’s the Criteria for Deciding If Cinnamon Raisin Breads are Healthy?

The best way to analyze cinnamon raisin breads is to follow a ‘template’ for deciding whether or not it’s healthy.

Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Here’s my template:

  1. First determine if the protein, carbs, and fat are good enough for health to happen or whether they are so off track that the food will start you on a track of un-health.
  2. Then look at the calories. You always want to meet your calorie goals.
  3. Then look at the sodium and cholesterol in case that’s a concern; say, you are on a low sodium or low fat diet.
  4. Finally look at the ingredients. Some are just horrible and you want to avoid these.

Is Raisin Bread Considered White Bread?

Raisin bread is thus only considered white bread if it’s made from white flour or enriched wheat flour.

You or anyone else can make raisin bread from any type of flour. If wheat flour – which is white flour – is used, then the raisin bread will be considered white bread.

Step 1. Analyze the Nutrition Info About the Breads

Protein

Let’s start with protein content of the different raisin breads.  Generally speaking, you want a bread that is a little higher in protein.

Most breads are 2 to 3 grams protein per slice. Any more than that is a plus. In our list of breads (see chart), Dave’s and Ezekiel are the two best raisin breads so far.

They each contain 4 grams protein per slice. That’s especially good if you are a vegetarian and need a little more protein in your diet.

Carbs

Next is carbs. Generally speaking, the lower the carbs, the better it is for you. Breads with about 11-15 grams carbs are the absolute best; anything over 20 grams per slice bread is too high.

None of these breads are in that category of too high and the best fare at 17 grams for Dave’s and 17 grams for Sun-Made. But being 18 grams is still good.

Which Raisin Bread is Good for Diabetics?

My recommendation is the Dave’s, Sun-Made, Thomas’, and Ezekiel, considering the carbs alone.

Since diabetes is a disease where carbohydrate metabolism is going haywire, you would want a raisin bread to have the lowest possible amount of carbohydrates in it to be a healthier choice.

Sugar
Especially for diabetes, you also want the protein to be a good amount, the sugar levels to be low, and the fat to be low.

Ezekiel bread would be a good and healthy choice for diabetics. Ezekiel raisin bread has the lowest amount of sugar in it of any of the types. It has 5 grams sugar.

Considering that 4 grams is a teaspoon, there’s only a little over a teaspoon of sugar in one slice.

The American Heart Association has an added sugar limit (includes sugar in food) of no more than 6 teaspoons per day for most women per day and no more than 9 teaspoons per day for most men.

There’s no additional benefit to your health from eating added sugar.

Fat Comparison of the Raisin Breads

Fat

All the raisin breads reviewed are low fat and between 0 and 1.5 grams fat. This is a negligible amount of fat in the product.

It won’t bother anyone who already has high blood fats or high cholesterol.

Technically speaking it’s a little better to have a bread that has a little bit of fat than no fat at all.

The reason why is because fat helps to delay hunger and it prevents blood sugar from rising too fast from the carbs that are being digested.

This is easily overcome though by simply putting a little butter or avocado on the bread. Or maybe the meat you are eating has a little bit of fat.

Not having fat is only an issue if the bread is eaten by itself. With raisin bread, we’re going to assume that most people will toast it and add some butter so it will melt onto the bread and taste phenomenal. Thus, all the breads pass the fat test.

All the raisin breads – Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread, Dave’s Raisin Bread, Sun-Made Raisin Bread, Thomas’ Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bread, and Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread  have no cholesterol and their sodium is at a good amount with no threat to your health.

Based on the nutritional information, Dave’s and Ezekiel’s are the best choice so far.

Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread (1 slice)2 gm20 gm1 gm9 gm1.5 gm0 gm

Step 2. Evaluate the Calories

The best range for calories for a slice of bread is 80-100 calories. Any more than that would be too much.

All the raisin breads in our comparison are in that range, and Ezekiel is the best at 80 calories/slice. The highest caloric raisin bread is Pepperidge Farm with one slice at 100 calories.

Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread (1 slice)2 gm20 gm1.5 gm100105 mg0 mg

Step 3. Evaluate the Ingredients

When evaluating the ingredients, there are several things to consider. First of all, are there ingredients that don’t do anything except make it last longer on the shelves?

We see that Sun-Maid raisin bread has dough conditioners added.  Pepperidge Farm and Thomas Raisin Bread has calcium proprionate added. Sorbic acid is also added to Pepperidge Farm.

If you want to be a discriminating buyer that knows a lot about nutrition, this would be enough to disqualify those three breads from your choices.

Every artificial preservative and chemical going into your food ends up in your body and you then have to depend on your body to detoxify it. These ingredients have no food value whatsoever.

Next we will scrutinize the raisin breads for toxic ingredients. Sugar is always a toxin and it’s added to Sun-Maid, Dave’s, Pepperidge Farm, and Thomas brands.

Vegetable oil and canola oil are toxic as well. They are found in Thomas and Dave’s raisin breads, respectively. Ezekiel raisin bread doesn’t have any artificial ingredients or bad oils in them.

If you are sensitive to gluten, all the raisin breads on this list are not going to work for you.

All of them contain either wheat flour or wheat gluten. If your desire is to eat GMO free foods, none of these raisin breads fit the bill. If a food was GMO free, it would say it on the label.

None of them say this on their label. GMO foods include wheat, soy, canola, sugar, and sunflower oil.

If you are sensitive to dairy products and milk, only Ezekiel raisin bread and Dave’s will be your best bet.

Is  Ezekiel Raisin Bread Healthy?

Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread is a healthy raisin bread and the best, compared to the other breads on this comparison list.

Its ingredients are healthy. There aren’t a lot of added artificial ingredients; the ingredients are wholesome.

They are all organic, but they are not GMO-free. There isn’t added sugar; the sugar content is only from the raisins.

Also, sprouting grains and lentils and beans makes them healthier and maximizes the nutrient content.

All this plus the protein, carb, and fat content right within normal makes Ezekiel a healthy bread.

Dave’s Raisin Bread is not a super healthy raisin bread. It contains sugar and just because it’s organic doesn’t mean it’s any better than regular sugar.

Sugar is sugar and all it does is add calories, blinds the taste buds, and contributes to degenerative diseases.

Sunflower oil and canola oil are seed oils and they contribute to plaque in the arteries.

Canola oil contributes to heart disease. Acerola cherry powder and the ingredients that are organic may be good but they don’t offset the bad ingredients.

Is Homemade Raisin Bread Healthy?

If you bake your own homemade raisin bread, you can make it healthy or unhealthy.

To make it healthier, you might do any or all of the following:

  1. Add an egg for more protein.
  2. Add some almond flour to it to add a little bit of fat but not too much.
  3. Depend on the raisins for your sweetness of the bread.
  4. Add some additional ingredients such as herbs for flavor (cinnamon, monk fruit, stevia, alfalfa, green powder, sunflower lecithin)
  5. Add some fiber to it – acacia or psyllium or apple pectin
  6. Use only GMO-free ingredients.

If you made your own homemade raisin bread with the suggestions above, your raisin bread would be quite tasty and nourishing.

You’d feel that every bite was satisfying you. There’s a world of difference in what a bread bakery could do to create a healthy bread and what you yourself can do.

Homemade Raisin Bread would be the healthiest raisin bread you can make if you made it properly.

Sun-Maid Raisin Bread is a relatively healthy product. Although the protein, fat and carbs in Sun-Maid Raisin Bread are good, by the process of comparison, we see that other raisin breads are still better.

Sun-Made Raisin Bread doesn’t even add raisins; all the others do. It does have the added dough conditioners that make us wary of recommending it. Ezekiel bread is still a healthier raisin bread.

Although the protein, fat and carbs aren’t that bad for Thomas Raisin Bread, it’s the addition of sugar, vegetable oil, soy, and calcium proprionate that negate the health of this bread. Ezekiel Cinnamon Sprouted Raisin Bread is still better.

Is Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread Healthy?

Pepperidge Farm Raisin Bread is the least healthy of all of them. It adds calcium proprionate, sorbic acid and dextrose – all unnecessary if they changed their baking guidelines to healthy. It uses GMO soybean oil as well.

It has the highest carbs of all of them and the lowest fiber at 1 gram. If you are going to raise carbs in a recipe, this can be offset by a higher fiber content but Pepperidge Farm doesn’t do that. Ezekiel Raisin Bread is a lot healthier.

Final Considerations

Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread is your best bet if you want a healthy raisin bread.

Nutritionally, it’s a sound food with the protein, fat and carbohydrates spot on. The ingredients and taste are awesome.

You will feel nourished and supported with Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin Sprouted Bread. But making your own healthy raisin breads is an alternative. The recipes included will help you get started.
