Where to Pick Strawberries Near You (All States)

Strawberries are sweet and delicious when you buy them from the store. They’re even better when they’re fresh off the vine. Strawberry season depends on where you live, so you may have to wait for that farm-fresh taste. So, where can you pick strawberries near where you live?

You can pick strawberries at local U-Pick or Pick-Your-Own farms, orchards, greenhouses, and gardens. Local farmers often open their fields for picking at a lower price than store-bought. Another option is to grow your own, which means you can pick them for free as soon as they’re ripe on the vine.

Where Can You Pick Strawberries?

Even though California grows most of the U.S. strawberry supply, you can still enjoy berry picking no matter where you live!

Local orchards and strawberry patches are the best place to pick strawberries. They’re sometimes called “U-Pick” or “Pick-Your-Own” (PYO) farms.

Pick-your-own farms are great because you can select only the berries you want. That means only the biggest, juiciest berries will make it into your bucket. And picking your own is almost always cheaper than buying strawberries at the store or farmer’s market.

When Can You Pick Strawberries?

Strawberry season depends on where you live, but they’re generally considered to be a “spring crop.” If you live in the south or other warm climates, you may be able to start picking as early as December or January. In colder climates, you may have to wait until the dog days of summer to pick your berries.

National “Pick Strawberries Day” is May 20th in the U.S., so that should give you a good idea of when these delicious berries are at their season’s peak.

Where to Pick Strawberries Near You

No matter where you live, there’s probably somewhere nearby that you can pick strawberries. Of course, the time of year may vary depending on your location.

Let’s take a look at some places you can pick strawberries in your state. Of course, these are just some examples of spots you can check out in different areas near your location. There are many more strawberry picking farms across the U.S. than we could possibly discuss in this article.

Still, these are great places to start!

Strawberry Picking: Know Before You Go

Before you head out to fill up your buckets with fresh strawberries, there are a few tips to remember. Doing these things ahead of time will help ensure you have a great trip and make the most of your time.

1. Call Ahead: It’s always a good idea to call ahead to double-check whether the farm is currently open for U-pick. Even if the information on the website or social media page says they’re open, there’s always a possibility that the farm is closed or picked out for the season. Sometimes weather can have a big impact on the fruit, too, which can influence whether the farm is open and for how long.

2. Find Out the Hours: Some locations only allow U-pick for certain times during the day, and the rest of the time they’re open for normal sales and other operations. Before you show up only to be turned away, verify the times that you can go and pick-your-own berries.

3. Bring a Bucket: Many farms and pick-your-own orchards provide you with a bucket or other container to collect your berries. Still, not every farm is the same. It’s always a good idea to bring your own container just in case. Plus, some places charge for containers for your berries, so bringing your own bucket gives you somewhere to store your haul on the way home.

4. Dress Appropriately: Remember, strawberry picking doesn’t offer any shade. So, you’ll want to wear a hat and/or sunglasses and dress according to the temperature where you live. Closed-toed shoes are a must, and you may want to wear gloves to protect your hands. Sunscreen is always good for bare arms and legs, and you may need bug spray depending on your local conditions.

5. Bring Cash: Many smaller farms don’t accept credit cards or other forms of electronic payment. It’s a smart idea to bring enough cash to pay for your berries just in case. Always check with the establishment before you start picking so you know for sure you’ll be able to pay for what you pick.

Final Thoughts

Picking strawberries is fun for the whole family. Plus, you get to enjoy farm-fresh berries at home. Strawberries are delicious for eating alone or making tasty desserts. No matter where you live, you should be able to find a spot to pick berries near you!
