Ingredients You Will Need

You probably have a lot of these ingredients in your kitchen already. The frying batter is the same as any other. Here is everything you will need to make these delicious breaded mushrooms in the air fryer.

Ingredients

For the Breaded Mushrooms:

  • Mushrooms – baby Bella is the best but white will work as well.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Breadcrumbs – panko is best but regular will work fine as well.
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Fresh Parsley
  • Dried Oregano
  • Sea Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Eggs

For the Garlic & Chives Mayo

  • Mayonnaise
  • Fresh Chives
  • Fresh Garlic
  • Black Pepper

Step-by-Step Instructions

The recipe is pretty simple and quick. It comes together in minutes and you can definitely make it on a weeknight right before dinner.

STEP 1: Make The Frying Mix.

Start by mixing the bread crumbs with the onion powder, garlic powder, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Set aside.

Place the flour and beaten eggs in two different bowls next to the breadcrumb mix. This will be the breading station.

Make The Frying Mix

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. You will need it to place the breaded mushrooms before adding them to the air fryer since you most likely will have to work in batches.

Preheat the air fryer for a few minutes prior to cooking. This will ensure the container is hot enough and the mushrooms will come out crispy and delicious.

STEP 2: Coat The Mushrooms.

Coat The Mushrooms

Dip the mushrooms in the flour, then in the beaten eggs. Roll in the breadcrumbs until all covered and place on the baking sheet with parchment paper. Repeat until all mushrooms are breaded.

STEP 3: Air Fry The Mushrooms.

Air Fry The Mushrooms

Spray the container of the air fryer with a non-stick spray and arrange the mushrooms next to each other but with enough space so they don’t touch each other. Cook for several minutes, flipping over halfway through. This will ensure even cooking and crispy breading.

Depending on the size of the air fryer you can add up to 10 mushrooms at a time. Mine is pretty small so I was able to fit only 5.

STEP 4: Make The Chives and Garlic Mayo.

While the mushrooms are cooking, make the chives and garlic mayo. In a mixing bowl combine the mayonnaise, chives, garlic, and black pepper. Whisk to combine well and set aside.

Transfer the breaded mushrooms from the air fryer to a plate and serve immediately with the chives and garlic mayo. Enjoy!

Optional Modifications

If you want gluten-free breaded mushrooms, you can make the batter with gluten-free breadcrumbs bought from the store. You can also make your own by drying gluten-free bread for a couple of days on the counter.

Once the bread is dry enough, add it to a food processor and crumble. Keep the gluten-free breadcrumbs in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

To make the flour part of this recipe gluten-free use the recipe below for the gluten-free flour option:

  • 1 ⅓ Cup Oat Flour
  • ¾ Cup Almond Flour
  • ¼ Cup Potato Starch
  • 1 tbsp Baking Powder
  • ½ Tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Xanthan Gum

Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl and transfer to an airtight jar or container. The flour mix will last a little while. Use the exact same amount of gluten-free flour as in the original recipe.

Can You Make Breaded Mushrooms in The Oven?

You can absolutely make these in the oven. However, it will take much longer to cook them in the oven and the texture of the breading will not be as crispy as if made in the air fryer.

You can also deep fry the breaded mushrooms. However, the air fryer uses much less grease and the mushrooms still come out crispy and delicious. The traditional frying method requires a lot of vegetable oil and patience since the process is much slower than air frying them.

Cooking Times By Air Fryer Model

Every air fryer is different depending on the model. Make sure to follow the instructions and check on the mushrooms often. I usually do only a few at the beginning so I know when to stop frying or if I need to lower the temperature.

Can You Prepare This Recipe Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! I like to prepare the batter components the night before. When serving to guests, I bread the mushrooms and set them aside. I cook them right before serving. You can keep them in the fridge for up to several days.

Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for several days or in the freezer for up to three months. To reheat, sprinkle with a few drops of water and microwave for 30-50 seconds.

However, fried food rarely tastes good reheated in the microwave so be prepared that some of the texture and flavor will be lost.

If reheating from frozen, use the air fryer. Pop them frozen in the air fryer container and cook until well-thawed, heated, and crispy on the outside again.

What Goes Well With Breaded Mushrooms in an Air Fryer?

This delicious and unique side dish goes well with a beef, chicken, or fish main dish and is served on the side. I like to add it to a big family-style table and pair it with other vegetable sides. It is a fun, easy way to introduce mushrooms to kids and enjoy them yourself.

I like to add air-fried breaded mushrooms to salads, pasta dishes, and rice bowls. The texture of the crispy outside shell combined with the soft, warm inside is perfect for almost any other dish and accompanies the rest of the table perfectly.

The garlic and chives mayo gives the dish a little extra flavor on top of the amazing texture. Follow the full recipe below and enjoy making this delicious side dish at home.
